Water supply and sanitation

Regional and local short-term training courses on management aspects of water and wastewater management

The issues
The water community has found its agreement: water supply and sanitation is in the center of its actions and is reflected in MDG 7 as well as in many bilateral aid strategies. Facing the challenge of achieving the MDG, water sectors worldwide are under strong pressure that comes together with changing natural conditions, liberalization and decentralization tendencies, population growth and migration issues. To sum it up, the sub-sector water supply and sanitation has to enormously increase the number of accesses, overcome water quality problems and droughts as well as pollution affects and, at the same time, build up and strengthen the staff to manage the complex situation reflected on an organizational level.

Thus, appropriate concepts for an adequate application and operation of technologies as well as innovative methods for human resource development (HRD) and financial management need to be developed. Furthermore, organizations and its executive level have to be strengthened to transfer reform processes into operational feasibility.

In this context utility management plays a central role: Efficiency has to be increased, performance has to be improved, regardless of its public or private organizational nature.

InWEnt’s approach
Needs of a sub-sector cannot be considered in a one-dimensional manner: The complex nature of water resources has to be reflected in an integrated manner, the tight linkage of individual-organization-system has to be considered, too. Thus, InWEnt’s activities follow a systemic approach, linking professional and methodical skills. In doing so, we aim to up-grade professional skills and to support individual and organizational performance improvement as well as to strengthen decision-making competencies. Thus, we contribute to the development and implementation of modern management concepts and of adequate technological solutions to guarantee an efficient water use. Emphasizing regional cooperation and networking, we provide platforms of experience exchange to promote the development of joint and internal-driven strategies, of adequate problem-solving and implementing concepts and thus, the emerging of synergies. Strengthening of capacity building entities on site is of particular interest. In exchanging South-North experience, we establish the partnership of learning organizations that are ready to listen to our partners and to cover their priority needs.

InWEnt’s services
We apply a widespread set of instruments according to encountered capacity building needs that comprises dialogue workshops and seminars, short-term and long-term trainings as well as Training for Trainer seminars.

Our capacity building measures are tailored for policy- and decision makers on highest level as well as for managers and junior professionals on the operational level.

In the context of water supply and sanitation, we offer capacity building measures in the following areas:

  • Water quality management
  • Wastewater treatment and its reuse
  • Operation and maintenance issues
  • Master planning
  • Utility performance improvement
  • Transfer of reform processes and its needs on operational level

Herewith, we focus on improving organizational performance by enhancing individual skills. In doing so, we aim to contribute to create a climate of innovation and to strengthen implementing and decision-taking competences. Special attention is given to aspects of HRD, financial management and the management of innovative, but appropriate technologies.
